Lyrical Commons: Poembodies

Lyrical Commons: Poembodies

$345.00
This five-week online workshop will explore the textual and sonic body of the poem, its homes in the breath and ear, and its relationship with song and communal speech. Each week will bring a lesson and related poem-writing prompts, and discussion as well as performance of the work created. Our readings will make a connection between Orphic and Slavic pre-Christian texts and contemporary American poetries. We’ll dig for the archaic musical roots of the lyric poem as a living thing whose development continues in performance; revisit meter and sonic and syllabic repetition as bodily functions; look at text and sound poems, get into poetry theater and immerse in the play of poem and song from Sappho to Sun Ra. And we'll talk and write about the social implications of respecting and connecting through the poem body to each other’s and our world’s rhythms, as we consider what animates the living word. Class sessions will meet synchronously via Zoom every Sunday, and assignments, poems and critiques will be shared via Wet Ink.
