Text and Image

Text and Image

In this five-week online workshop, we’ll practice various ways of generating texts and pairing them with images (largely prose/poetry with photography). Looking at works by Teju Cole, Roni Horn, W. G. Sebald, Claudia Rankine, Moyra Davey, Taryn Simon and Sophie Calle, each week we’ll draw from the work of one of these writers/artists, studying the ways in which they combine text and image. Using this writer/artist’s work as a guide and template, each student will create a new and original work of their own. We’ll question the ways in which images inflect on the texts, and vice versa. How is the image served by the text, and how is the text, in turn, served by the image? Is there a meaning that falls somewhere into the gap between the text and the image? Please note that no expertise in art, photography or image-making is required! Students of all backgrounds and disciplines are welcome. Students of all backgrounds and disciplines are welcome. Class sessions will meet synchronously via Zoom every Sunday afternoon, and assignments, texts, images and critiques will be shared via Wet Ink.
