The Poetic Sequence

The Poetic Sequence

Somewhere between the novel-in-verse and the poem in three parts lies the poetic sequence, a form and genre that strives toward a fuller expression than a single poem can create, using the complexities of juxtaposition and association to create an overall effect. In this generative online workshop, we’ll read, write and explore the mid-range of poetic sequence potentialities, from sonnet crowns to rengas to Modernist inventions and beyond, with an eye to expanding both the notion of what a successful poetic sequence is and what it can accomplish. Readings will include work by Sonia Sanchez, Anne Carson, Joan Larkin, Muriel Rukeyser and Marilyn Nelson, among others. Class sessions will meet synchronously via Zoom every Sunday, and assignments, poems and critiques will be shared via Wet Ink.
