Rethinking Poetic Form

How can poets experiment with traditional poetic forms so that they speak of and to the world today? Are there ways that we can "bend" the rules of these forms while still being guided by them in order to fuel artistic growth? This seven-week online workshop will explore innovative contemporary approaches to forms such as the ghazal, the sonnet, the elegy, the prose poem and more by poets such as Patricia Smith, Larry Levis, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Yusef Komunyakaa and Jamila Woods. Students will write and workshop new poems in a different form each week, drawing upon these writers' approaches to (re)writing form for inspiration. Class sessions will meet synchronously via Zoom every Tuesday, and assignments, poems and critiques will be shared via Wet Ink.
