Filling the Page: Prose for Poets

Filling the Page: Prose for Poets

Sarah Manguso has said, "I’ve never wanted to make up stories, so before I could fill a page I was called a poet, and after I could fill a page I was called an essayist." This five-week, asynchronous online workshop is designed for poets working on creative nonfiction, fiction or hybrid projects that fill the page. We'll read work by Amy Hempel, Chelsea Hodson, Carmen Maria Machado, Claudia Rankine, Mary Ruefle and James Tate, searching for territory that prose writers share with poets (repetition, juxtaposition, imagery, sound), while also practicing the skills needed to hold a reader's attention in longer, sustained pieces. Generative prompts will be provided weekly via Wet Ink for students to practice developing their prose writing in a supportive space. In addition to that ongoing practice, each student will have the opportunity to submit one complete prose piece (or multiple shorter pieces, up to 2500 words total) for written feedback from the instructor and other students.
