MFA Application Bootcamp

MFA Application Bootcamp

This seven-week online workshop will help you target and strategically apply to MFA programs in order to continue your study of poetry at the graduate level. You'll receive peer and instructor feedback on your writing sample (10–12 pages, submitted with your registration), personal statement and other supporting documents—as well as an overview of the differences between funded and unfunded programs and how best to navigate the application process (i.e. number of applications to submit, aesthetic fit, faculty reputation, size of program, cost of living, etc). You'll be guided by Natalie Eilbert, a Columbia MFA graduate and former Jay C. and Ruth Halls Fellow at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Weekly work for the course will be done asynchronously via Wet Ink, and the professor will provide video introductions to course material and assignments and a one-on-one video conference with each student to answer more technical questions about the application process. Past bootcamp participants have won fellowships to attend Iowa, Michigan, NYU, UT–Austin, Columbia, Hunter, Syracuse and Oregon, among other top MFA programs.
