I celebrate myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good
belongs to you.
—Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass (1855)
On July 4th, 1855, Walt Whitman self-published the first edition of Leaves of Grass out of the Rome Brothers print shop on Old Fulton St in Brooklyn, revolutionizing American poetry and putting Brooklyn on the literary map.
We celebrate Whitman, our Captain, with #55 to commemorate his revolutionary book and the birth of American poetry as we know it.
